Outing of the Maison des Canuts – CM2

We went to visit the Maison des Canuts and the traboules (passageway from one street to another through a building).
“In the Maison des Canuts, we learned the order of fabrics: monks and peasants wore coton, wool and linen. The members of the bourgeoisie wore silk. Noblement and the High Clerk members would wore clothes with guilded silk-threads.

The canuts could work up to 12 hours a day, and would end up having no more than 35 cm of fabric. Until 10, children would help for chores. Passed that age, they would go and learn the job of the Canuts with the silk manufacturers until 12. They would then work as Canuts.

After this visit, a guide took us to the Terreaux Plaza through the traboules.” Testimony from a CM2 student.
